The Filter Bubble

We propose a network system, that does not use a personalized data profile of the user, and neither searches completely random. It uses the emotional state, as temporal and dynamic profile of the user. This way a user is able to be connected to information, without being affected by the filter bubble, nor having to filter through random information of him- or herself. “A filter bubble is a situation in which a website algorithm selectively guesses what information a user would like to see based on information about the user (such as location, past click behavior and search history) and, as a result, users become separated from information that disagrees with their viewpoints, effectively isolating them in their own cultural or ideological bubbles.” (source: wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Filter_bubble)

Abstract

The aim of this project is to explore an alternative to personalized network data profiles, the fundaments of the filter bubble. The alternative proposed is the incorporation of a temporal and dynamic profile based on the emotion of the user. Thus giving a new perspective on human relations; people would in theory obtain the opportunity to connect based on emotions, in stead of common interest or other. This project explores the possibilities, available technologies and current research with regards to measuring and combining emotions. And finally in doing so, this paper wil hypothesize the possible outcome of an emotion-network.

Today we are testing different applications and systems for facial recognition in order to decide what to incorporate in and exclude from our project and system. Every system has its ups and downs. This program is called 'E-Motion' and always tells us that we are in a happy state.

Introduction

This Weblog is created to keep track of the progress of our project for the class 'Information, Cognition and Perception' at the UvA Science Park. During the course we were asked to write a proposal for a possible future innovation in the area of perception and cognition in combination with new and emerging technologies. We are now working on a way to incorporate the use of facial recognition to develop a network that isn't, how Manuel Castells would call it, 'me-centered'. The network should not be based on previous personal search queries but purely based on emotions. This is to also discover the long-tail of the information on the world wide web as well as people with whom you would never be in contact with in the current situation of networking.
